FAQ’s
Cartogram guides patients, visitors, and staff through complex health care environments with confidence. By providing seamless, turn-by-turn navigation to any location, including buildings, parking garages, and outdoor areas, it reduces confusion, lowers the risk of missed appointments, and improves operational efficiency. Cartogram also supports critical workflows, such as digital check-in and appointment-based routing, delivering a more connected and intuitive experience from the digital front door to the point of care.
Examples of how patients and visitors engage with Cartogram:
- From Home via Website:
A patient or visitor visits your hospital’s website from a desktop and opens the indoor map to view their appointment location. They can print a floor map with a QR code marking that destination. When scanned, the QR code opens either the mobile app or a web-based map. If using the app, the patient’s real-time location is detected, and they tap “Directions” to begin turn-by-turn navigation. If using the web version, their destination is pre-selected; they enter their current location and tap “Go” to receive turn-by-turn directions. - Through Your Mobile App or Epic MyChart:
A patient opens your mobile app or Epic MyChart, clicks on their upcoming appointment, and selects “Directions.” The app guides them from their current location to campus, to a designated parking area, into the correct entrance, and to their appointment, then back to their car after the visit. - Via Mass Messaging:
A patient receives a text, email, or an appointment reminder. When they tap the embedded link, they’re directed to the native app (if installed) or to a web-based map showing their destination. They can enter their starting point and receive real-time, turn-by-turn directions. - On Arrival Using QR Codes:
A patient or visitor parks on campus and scans a QR code posted nearby. If they have the app, their location is automatically detected, and they simply select their destination to begin navigation. If they don’t have the app, they are prompted to either download it or access the map through their mobile browser with location pre-selected. The patient then selects their current location and taps “Go” to receive turn-by-turn directions. - At a Kiosk or Digital Signage:
Upon entering the facility, a patient or visitor approaches a touchscreen kiosk and selects their destination. If the route is complex, they can choose to send it to their phone. A QR code appears, which they scan to instantly access the route on their mobile device and continue navigating on the go.
- Chatbot:
A patient or visitor sees signage on campus that reads, “Can’t find what you’re looking for? Text this number.” The patient sends a text with their question, for example, “Where is cardiology?” and receives a response with a unique link to their destination. When the patient clicks the link, a web-based map opens in their mobile browser, displaying the destination location. The patient then selects their current location and taps “Go” to receive turn-by-turn directions.
- 24/7 Wayfinding Hotline:
A patient or visitor sees signage on campus that reads, “Can’t find what you’re looking for? Call this number.” When the patient calls, a support representative answers and asks for the code displayed on the sign to determine the patient’s current location. The representative then asks for the patient’s destination and uses Cartogram to provide real-time, step-by-step verbal directions to guide the patient to their destination.
General mapping apps may help patients reach the hospital campus, but they stop short when it matters most. They don’t inform patients where to park, which entrance to use, or how to locate their appointment within the building. This uncertainty creates bottlenecks, delays, and confusion right at the point of care.
When patients get lost, arrive late, or miss appointments, it disrupts clinical workflows, impacts revenue, and can negatively affect HCAHPS scores. By guiding patients each step of the way from home to the correct parking area, entrance, and appointment location, Cartogram helps reduce no-shows, improves operational efficiency, and enhances the overall care experience.
As healthcare systems plan for the future, digital wayfinding becomes more than a convenience; it’s a strategic investment in access, satisfaction, and efficiency. Whether your facility needs a simple web-based indoor map today or a “Blue Dot” solution, wayfinding is a critical part of shaping a connected, patient-centered experience.
Cartogram supports iOS and Android devices, laptops, desktops, kiosks, and digital signage, offering real-time directions via a chatbot, as well as a 24/7 wayfinding hotline.
